Matching specific device driver versions to versions of Windows can be a confusing and a tedious hassle, to say the least. SCCM makes deploying the semi annual updates a lot easier than any manual method. But some updates are incompatible with the existing drivers on the system.

Incompatible Driver causes update to fail.

In pilot testing I found an error that the logs said was caused by intcdaud.sys driver. With some investigating I found that Windows 10 1903 was incompatible with Intel(R) Display Audio driver. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4465877/what-needs-your-attention-intel-audio-display-notification

We would have discovered this earlier, but our organization skipped the 1809 update due to the widespread problems reported, and some people losing data. After failing the 1903 update, it also broke windows updates, and caused the system to stop getting patches after this failure. Which then required some hands on manual windows update remediation to get them working again.

I wrote a query in SCCM to detect this driver, and I found it was on thousands of computers. I tested a couple of other computers with that same Intel(R) Display Audio driver, and found that some upgraded fine without presenting the same error. That was interesting.

I did some more spot testing and kept finding inconsistent results. A little more digging and I found that it was only a specific range of versions that were affected. https://www.thewindowsclub.com/intel-display-audio-device-drivers-blocking-update

SCCM doesn't provide details about which driver versions are installed on computers. But I needed a way to target only the specific driver range, so that I could update the rest of our computers while I figured out a solution for the driver conflict.

Then I found a great article that showed how to start collecting driver version information from computers when they ran their hardware inventory cycle. http://www.potentengineer.com/inventorying-and-reporting-on-driver-information-with-configmgr/

This script had a slick way to simply use a discovery script to make the needed changes, and did not use a remediation script. This is from the potentengineer article above:

You will need to either force a hardware inventory, or wait until the next hardware inventory cycle, and let the computers report back to the SCCM database. Then you still need to add this new class to the Hardware Inventory section in Client Settings, in the SCCM Console.

Adding Custom Class to Hardware Inventory in Client Setting

The potentengineer article did not explain how to add a custom class, so I'm including information from a Microsoft article on how to do it, but it isn't an instruction for how to specifically do what is described in my article here. See the image below for what classes are available to choose in SCCM after adding the classes to a sample workstation.

To add a new inventory class

You can only add inventory classes from the hierarchy's top level server by modifying the default client settings. This option is not available when you create custom device settings.

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, choose Administration > Client Settings > Default Client Settings.
  2. On the Home tab, in the Properties group, choose Properties.
  3. In the Default Client Settings dialog box, choose Hardware Inventory.
  4. In the Device Settings list, choose Set Classes.
  5. In the Hardware Inventory Classes dialog box, choose Add.
  6. In the Add Hardware Inventory Class dialog box, click Connect.
  7. In the Connect to Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) dialog box, specify the name of the computer from which you will retrieve the WMI classes and the WMI namespace to use for retrieving the classes. If you want to retrieve all classes below the WMI namespace that you specified, click Recursive. If the computer you are connecting to is not the local computer, supply login credentials for an account that has permission to access WMI on the remote computer.
  8. Choose Connect.
  9. In the Add Hardware Inventory Class dialog box, in the Inventory classes list, select the WMI classes that you want to add to Configuration Manager hardware inventory.
  10. If you want to edit information about the selected WMI class, choose Edit, and in the Class qualifiers dialog box, provide the following information:
  • Display name - This name will be displayed in Resource Explorer.
  • Properties - Specify the units in which each property of the WMI class will be displayed.
  • You can also designate properties as a key property to help uniquely identify each instance of the class. If no key is defined for the class and multiple instances of the class are reported from the client, only the latest instance that is found is stored in the database.
  • When you've finished configuring the properties, click OK to close the Class qualifiers dialog box and the other open dialog

Connect to the WMI as described above in steps 6,7,and 8 of the Microsoft article, to add custom classes we need for driver versions. I chose to select DeviceID, DeviceName, DriverProviderName, DriverVersion, and HardwareID.

NOTE: If you don't want to wait for hardware inventory to run, the potentengineer article has a cab download you can use to create the classes.

After doing all of this, I was then able to create a query in SCCM so that I could easily identify all computers with the affected driver version range, and exclude them from the 1903 update. Here is the query:

This is also very useful for other related driver conflicts with 1903 and future updates, as well as helping us clean up our existing drivers in SCCM. We can identify which drivers are no longer being used on any of our computers. Any driver version can now be easily obtained by using SCCM queries.

I hope this helps someone overcome one of the many obstacles related to Windows 10 updates and driver conflicts and general driver mismatch issues.

Dutch custom officials have seized ham sandwiches from British drivers post-Brexit rules banning personal imports of meat and dairy products in the European Union.

Officers wearing high visibility jackets were captured confiscating ham sandwiches wrapped in tinfoil from drivers by Dutch media.

In an announcement made by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affair, the transport representatives had been advised to impose a strict ban of ham and cheese sandwich and all other meat and dairy products from January 01.

This ban came into effect from December 31 from 11 pm and disallowed the lorry drivers to carry these products, even if they are meant for travel snacking in the long drives. The same ban also applied to tourists travelling to the EU.

'Drivers travelling to the EU should be aware of additional restrictions to personal imports taking effect from 1 January 2021. If you are carrying prohibited items in your luggage, vehicle or person you will need to use, consume, or dispose of them at or before the border,' the official guidelines read.

The guidelines used the example of 'hand cheese' sandwich in particular sending a furry of laughter across the country. 'From 1 January 2021 you will not be able to bring POAO (products of an animal origin) such as those containing meat or dairy (eg a ham and cheese sandwich) into the EU,' the officials stated.

As per the European Union, the ban is necessary as it prevents the spread of pathogens in meat and dairy products.

As per the official guidelines and the advice leaflets being handed over, if the drivers fail to declare possession of these sandwiches, or any other meat and dairy product, they could bear a fine or even criminal prosecution.

While the meat and dairy products were disallowed, meat extracts and meat concentrates are still allowed across the country borders, giving a sigh of relief to the Britishers.

The decision has not gained popular vote from the lorry drivers who claim this has been their staple diet for the last few years when travelling to the EU for long trips.
